A successful Arts Council Grant for Arts Application matched by funding from Portsmouth Cultural Trust has enabled the creation of the Funky Town Festival. The event took place on the 27th September 2014 and was attending by nearly 3,000 people. The event included circus workshops, samba drumming, street theatre and site specific work. Local partners and artists were engaged and enabled the delivery of the programme, these included New Theatre Royal, Top Banana Circus School, Urban Vocal Group and many more.
The Funky Town Festival was very well received, with nearly 3,000 attendees, and many children participated in the circus workshops. A number of these people then subsequently joined the circus school at the Guildhall.
What was evident on the day was the quality of street theatre was very high. Many of those in attendance hadn’t seen such artists before, especially in Guildhall Square. The location was perfect for this form of entertainment. The responses via social media to the event were positive and encouraging as was the local media coverage.
